Subaru is back, and it's causing a stir with the return of the long-awaited WRX STI. But pause for a moment before celebrating—this revival comes with significant limitations that have enthusiasts scratching their heads. The newly introduced S210 STI is limited to just 500 units, exclusively for the Japanese market, and perhaps most controversially, it features a continuously variable transmission (CVT) instead of the manual gearbox that fans have come to expect.
This CVT decision is particularly baffling given the car's sporty pedigree; Subaru claims it’s a “two-pedal sports sedan directly descended from the Nürburgring 24-hour race machine.” The disappointment among loyal fans is palpable, as many believe an STI should embody a more engaging driving experience that only a manual transmission can provide.
But it’s not all doom and gloom. The S210 STI packs quite a punch with its upgraded FA24 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, now producing a hefty 300 horsepower compared to the WRX tS’s 271 horsepower. Alongside performance enhancements, it boasts impressive specifications such as STI wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, and six-piston Brembo brakes, aiming to deliver superior handling and stopping power.
Visually, the S210 STI is striking. With its aggressive stance, fixed rear wing, and stunning wheels, it’s arguably the best-looking version of the WRX yet. Inside, it features luxurious carbon fiber Recaro bucket seats that add to the overall sporty feel, reminiscent of high-end performance vehicles.
However, the absence of limited-slip differentials raises further questions about the car's performance capabilities, as these features are typically essential for handling in high-powered sports cars. The critics are unanimous: while Subaru has delivered a visually stunning and powerful vehicle, the choice to limit production and compromise on the transmission fundamentally alters the driving experience that enthusiasts crave.
As fans voice their concerns, the big question remains—will Subaru listen to the demand for a true STI experience? As it stands, the S210 may be a tantalizing glimpse of what could be, but for now, it feels more like a tease than a celebration of the iconic WRX STI legacy. Only time will reveal whether this model is a stepping stone to something greater or simply a well-packaged letdown.
